Honouring Kaumātua, Connecting Communities
Kaumātua is a kaupapa grounded in Te Ao Māori that celebrates our pakeke through kōrero and portraiture. It is a community-led taonga, nurtured by the involvement of whānau, hapū, iwi, and local communities — the true holders of its mauri.
Rooted in story sovereignty, Kaumātua centres the voices of our elders — told in their own words, on their own terms.
More than a book, Kaumātua is a living archive that carries the mātauranga, mana, and wairua of our kaumātua. It honours those who grew up in a different Aotearoa — shaped by unique times, cultural strength, and lived experience.
Through pūrākau, photography, exhibitions, and hui, this kaupapa builds connection across generations and offers insight into the richness and diversity of Māori lives — in all their complexity, beauty, and strength.
